Pat Caldwell Report

Surf Zone Forecast for Oahu
  • Hazards
No high surf advisory or warnings.
  • Forecast
Surf along north facing shores will be 4 to 8 feet through Tuesday. Surf along west facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet through Tuesday. Surf along east facing shores will be 2 to 3 feet through Tuesday. Surf along south facing shores will be less than 3 feet through Tuesday.
  • Outlook
Outlook through Sunday Feb 14: surf is expected to rise significantly Tuesday night along the island's north and west shores. The surf is from a northwest swell generated by a large and powerful storm system far northwest of the Hawaiian islands. The surf is likely to reach warning level heights of 25 and 20 feet for the island's north and west shores respectively and persist through Thursday before lowering into advisory levels Friday. A reinforcing smaller northwest swell is expected to come in Saturday and maintain advisory level surf into the weekend. An out of season south swell is slated to arrive as early as Wednesday, peaking late Wednesday night and Thursday morning along the island's south facing shores. The surf has the potential of reaching the 8 foot high surf advisory threshold for the south facing shores. So there this surf to go around the middle and latter half of the work week. Surf heights are forecast heights of the face or front of waves. The surf forecast is based on the significant wave height, the average height of the one third largest waves, in the zone of maximum refraction. Some waves may be more than twice as high as the significant wave height. Expect to encounter rip currents in or near any surf zone.

Farmer's Market
Mamblog Section - Default Category
Friday, 16 October 2009
If you haven't been yet then what are you waiting for?! the Farmers Markets at Kapiolani Community College on Saturday mornings and the one at the Blaisdell Center on Wednesday afternoon are officially where to get some good grub. Some of my favorite stuff to get: corn on the cob, sea asparagus, oat cakes, bale breads, and all the other locally grown veggies. I even found some farm fresh eggs last time. These markets have replaced my vegetable and fruit shipping at the stores and I am saving some money supporting local farmers, so check it out. Seriously good eats at farmers markets. There is also a smaller one on Thursday evening in Makiki.

Waimanalo Man-of-War
Lifestyle - Session Stories
Friday, 27 July 2007
Usually aan easy-going beachbreak, there are days when Waimanalo can get swell up for body surfers and bodyboarders alike.  But beware the Portuguese Man-of-War, a scary jellyfish that stings and burns.  If you are stung by the jelly, see a lifeguard.  You will most likely receive vinegar which neutralizes the sting.

Monk Seal at Diamond Head
Mamblog Section - Default Category
Friday, 20 July 2007
No joke, after a great session at Diamond Head yesterday, I paddled in, and to my surprise a giant monk seal was on the beach basking in the sun. There were a couple of signs stating not to go near the animal and that it was one of the most en danged species in the world. Only in Hawaii. Might still be there today

Diamond Head Rules
Mamblog Section - Default Category
Thursday, 13 March 2008
Just another day where diamond head was the default surf spot for the masses. Decent sized waves for the winter, a little wind as usual, and surprisingly crowded. I though everyone would be going the north shore.
